Everything You Need To Know About Moisturisers

Your face is literally always on display, so it is natural to want to show the world a healthy, glowing complexion. However, exposure to the elements also means that facial skin is most vulnerable to environmental factors, physical damage and signs of ageing.

Failure to look after the dermal barrier on our face can produce highly visible consequences like breakouts, flakiness, hyperpigmentation, fine lines and wrinkles. Elave Skincare formulations are specially created to combat these issues.

Moisturisers work by increasing the water content in the skin’s outermost layer, enhancing its ability to hold water and so relieving dryness. It also covers small skin fissures, providing a soothing protective film that protects skin from friction. Dry skin looks dull, rough, red and scaly. When your face is properly moisturised, it will look plumper, smoother, brighter and younger.

Apply a facial moisturiser twice daily: in the morning after cleansing, and in the evening, between cleansing and going to bed. Don’t use soap to cleanse as it is very drying, and stick to tepid, not hot, water to avoid further dehydration. Lightly exfoliate with a soft washcloth or cotton pad to slough off dead skin cells and create a palette of soft, new skin. Apply moisturiser while your face is slightly damp skin to help with absorption and create a barrier to protect your skin.

Avoid using too much of too many products for best results

Avoid using too much of too many products to minimise the risk of ‘pilling’ or triggering irritant reactions. A pea-sized amount of moisturiser is all you need. Apply with your fingertips using gentle circular motions until all the formula is absorbed. Do not forget your neck and decolletage. A light, non-greasy moisturiser is best for day use. At night, you could consider using a richer formula which works while you sleep.

Look for moisturisers which contain goodies like: Hyaluronic Acid - helps increase the moisture in your skin; Humectants - substances like glycerin and honey which pull water from the air into the outer layer of the skin; Antioxidants - which combat free radicals in the environment; and Vitamins and Botanicals - to help stimulate the production of collagen and reduce fine lines.

Formulas which are non-comedogenic (non-greasy) will not clog up your skin and a moisturiser combined with broad spectrum sunscreen does double duty by hydrating your dermis while combatting photoaging.

If you have dry, sensitive or reactant Irish skin, you will want to use the gentlest, most natural ingredients. Elave Skincare leaves out the harsh ingredients which can trigger breakouts, rashes and itchiness. That means no sulfates, MI, SLS, dyes, scents and preservatives. Our formulas suit all skin types, including dry, oily and combination skin, and are especially suitable for eczema, rosacea and dermatitis-prone skin.

We recommend using a sunscreen every day from March onwards to protect against UV damage and visible signs of ageing like fine lines, sagging and sun spots. Elave Daily Skin Defence SPF45 is the winner of the IPN Best Skincare Product of the Year 2023 for the second year in a row. This unique combination of oil-free emollients offers high factor protection against UVA & UVB rays in a vitamin B5 & E infused, invisible zinc formulation which is absorbed quickly into the skin. Use under a moisturiser and/or makeup.

Finally, studies have concluded that lifestyle plays a big role in the levels of hydration in your skin. Destress by taking time out to relax with a book or listening to music. Get plenty of sleep. When you sleep, the facial muscles relax, blood flow increases, and collagen is rebuilt. Eat lots of fruit and leafy green vegetables, avoid salt and alcohol, and get out for a circulation-boosting walk in the fresh air every day.

Your skin will thank you for it!
